Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
August 26, 1877 — Supply Lines at Pleven
Bulgarian supply columns organised by local merchants and villagers helped sustain Russian siege operations around Pleven as the encirclement of Osman Pasha’s garrison tightened. The contribution of civilians — men and women who hauled supplies, maintained roads, and nursed the wounded — was essential to the success of the liberation campaign and a reminder that the war was not fought by armies alone.
August 26, 1984 — Bulgaria at the Friendship Games
Bulgaria hosted athletics events as part of the Friendship Games — the socialist world’s alternative competition to the Los Angeles Olympics, which the Soviet-led bloc had boycotted. Bulgarian athletes performed strongly across track and field, weightlifting, and combat sports, reinforcing the country’s reputation as a consistent force in international athletics throughout the communist era.
