Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.

August 27, 1877 — New Siege Lines at Pleven

Russian engineers and Bulgarian volunteers constructed new siege fortifications around Pleven, gradually cutting off all remaining routes by which the Ottoman garrison could receive food, ammunition, or reinforcements. The methodical strangling of Pleven — directed by some of Russia’s finest military engineers — would bring Osman Pasha’s surrender closer with every passing week, though the final capitulation was still months away.

August 27, 1944 — American Bombers Over Bulgaria

American aircraft struck rail and industrial infrastructure across Bulgaria for the second time that summer, targeting lines used by German forces withdrawing from the Balkans. The raids signalled Allied resolve to disrupt German logistics regardless of Bulgaria’s nominal non-belligerent status, and added further urgency to Sofia’s desperate attempts to reach an armistice before the country became a full battlefield.
