September 8, 1885 — Prince Alexander Accepts the Unification
Prince Alexander I of Battenberg issued a historic proclamation in the old capital of Veliko Tarnovo, officially recognizing the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. By assuming the title of Prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria, he validated the revolutionary act in the eyes of the nation, despite the risk of foreign military intervention.
September 8, 1946 — Referendum Abolishes the Monarchy
A national referendum was held in Bulgaria to determine the country’s form of government. Over 90% of voters, under the influence of the ruling Fatherland Front coalition, voted to abolish the monarchy. This vote led to the departure of the young Tsar Simeon II and the declaration of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria.
