Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 17, 1912 — Bulgaria Besieges Adrianople
Bulgarian forces formally began siege operations around Adrianople (Edirne) — the great Ottoman fortress that had been the empire’s European capital for nearly a century before the fall of Constantinople. Defended by a large and well-supplied garrison under Shukri Pasha, Adrianople would hold out for months before finally surrendering to Bulgarian forces in March 1913, in one of the most significant military achievements in Bulgarian history.
October 17, 1991 — Bulgaria Joins the IMF and World Bank
Bulgaria was formally admitted to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, marking a decisive step in integrating the country’s economy into global financial institutions. Membership provided access to international credit facilities and technical assistance crucial for Bulgaria’s economic transition, though it also brought structural adjustment requirements that shaped the painful reforms of the early 1990s.
