Every day in Bulgarian history holds a story worth remembering. In this recurring series, On This Day in Bulgaria, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country’s history.
October 19, 1912 — At the Gates of Constantinople
Bulgarian advance units reached the Catalca defensive line — the last Ottoman fortified position before Constantinople — less than three weeks after entering the war. The Bulgarian army’s rapid advance across Thrace had astonished Europe. Whether Bulgaria would storm the ancient capital became the burning question of the hour in every European chancellery, and the great powers began applying diplomatic pressure to halt the Bulgarian advance.
October 19, 1946 — Bulgaria Becomes a People’s Republic
Following the September referendum abolishing the monarchy, Bulgaria was formally proclaimed a People’s Republic. The proclamation marked the definitive end of the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the installation of a communist state modelled on the Soviet Union. A new political order, new symbols, and a new constitution would follow in the months and years ahead, transforming the country at every level.
