The Maritsa does not stay in the mountains for long. It rises in Rila and, after a short mountain stretch, flows out onto the plain — by the time it reaches Pazardzhik it has become a lowland river, slow, wide and lined with fields. In the latest episode of the Bulgaria From Above mini-series, Bronicable flies for a full hour without commentary over the western edge of the Upper Thracian Plain — from Pazardzhik and its island park to the railway town of Septemvri and the mineral pools of Varvara.
The Maritsa Lowlands from a Bird’s-Eye View
This is the westernmost part of the Upper Thracian Plain, the great lowland of southern Bulgaria. Sredna Gora rises to the north, the Rhodopes to the south, and between them the Maritsa runs through a patchwork of fields, orchards and villages. From above the plain reads like a map — straight field boundaries, lines of poplars along the irrigation channels, roads and railway lines running side by side towards Plovdiv — with the mountains always somewhere on the horizon.
Pazardzhik — The Market Town on the Maritsa
Pazardzhik was founded at the end of the 15th century as a market settlement on the Maritsa, and the name still carries it — pazar means market. In the 19th century it grew into one of the busiest trading towns in the region, and its best-known landmark from that time is the Church of the Dormition of the Holy Mother of God, famous for its carved wooden iconostasis. From the air the town is a mix of eras: the old centre with its red roofs, the apartment blocks of the socialist decades, and the river bending along the edge of it all.
Svoboda Island — The Park in the River
Svoboda Island is a park on an island in the Maritsa, right next to the city centre. For locals it is simply “the Island” — a place for walks, sport and summer shade. From above it is a long green strip surrounded by water, with alleys and old trees, tied back to the town by its bridges. A short chapter, but a telling one: the place where the river and the city come closest together.
Septemvri — Where the Narrow-Gauge Line Begins
Septemvri is a railway town first of all. Here the main line from Sofia to Plovdiv meets the Rhodope narrow-gauge railway, which starts in Septemvri and climbs through Velingrad, Yakoruda and Bansko to end at Dobrinishte, beneath Pirin — the other end of the line, seen in the Beneath Pirin episode. From the air the station dominates: long rail yards, parked carriages and platforms running alongside the town, with fields beginning straight after the last tracks. This is the longest chapter of the film and the flattest — the drone drifts over the town and the plain while the mountains slowly close in on the horizon.
Varvara — Thermal Pools at the Edge of the Plain
Varvara lies about 15 km from Pazardzhik on the road to Velingrad, just where the plain meets the first slopes of the Rhodopes. The village is known for its hot mineral springs, and several pool complexes have grown up around them, open all year round. In summer the view from above is pure colour — blue pools, rows of parasols, green lawns and red roofs packed tightly together. Varvara is also on the narrow-gauge line, around ten kilometres from Septemvri, so here the train and the springs are part of the same story.
