February 8, 1913 — The Battle of Bulair Begins
The Battle of Bulair began between Bulgarian and Ottoman forces during the First Balkan War. The fighting took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula, where Ottoman troops attempted to break through and threaten Bulgarian positions. The Bulgarian army repelled the attack, helping secure the front and preserve pressure on Ottoman forces in Thrace. The battle mattered because the First Balkan War was not a single campaign but a series of interconnected operations around Adrianople, Çatalca, Bulair, and other strategic points.
Bulgarian victories carried enormous public meaning at the time, feeding hopes for national unification and military prestige. Yet the war’s aftermath would also bring diplomatic disappointment and new conflict among former allies. February 8 belongs to both the hope and the tragedy that defined the Balkan Wars.
February 8, 1989 — Podkrepa Independent Trade Union Is Founded
The Podkrepa Independent Trade Union was established, later becoming the Podkrepa Confederation of Labour. Its creation came during the final year of communist rule, when independent civic organization was beginning to challenge the monopoly of the state and the Bulgarian Communist Party. A genuinely independent trade union was a bold idea in a system where labour representation had long been controlled through official structures.
Podkrepa became part of the wider democratic movement, linking workers’ rights, civil society, free association, and political change. The union’s emergence showed that opposition to the regime was not limited to intellectual circles or environmental groups — it also entered workplaces and social questions. February 8, 1989 marks an important moment in the reawakening of independent public life in Bulgaria.
