May 20, 1878 — Dondukov-Korsakov Takes Office as Imperial Russian Commissioner
On May 20, 1878, Prince Alexander Dondukov-Korsakov took office in Plovdiv as Imperial Russian Commissioner in Bulgaria. His role came after the Russo-Turkish War and during the difficult transition from Ottoman rule to restored Bulgarian statehood.
The Russian provisional administration had to manage security, finance, courts and the preparation of political institutions. It was a period when decisions about everyday government developed alongside the construction of a future state order. Dondukov-Korsakov’s period in Bulgaria overlapped with the debates that led to the Tarnovo Constitution.
His assumption of office was therefore more than an administrative change. It belonged to the early institutional formation of a free Bulgaria, when the practices and structures on which the Principality would stand were being created.
May 20, 1923 — Bulgaria’s Maritime Museum Opens in Varna
On May 20, 1923, the Maritime Museum in Varna officially opened. It grew out of earlier efforts to preserve objects connected with Bulgarian shipping and naval history.
Varna’s location made it a natural home for such an institution. The city was one of Bulgaria’s main windows onto the Black Sea, and the museum turned maritime memory into an accessible part of public history. Its exhibits tell the story of the connection between the state, shipping and the sea.
May 20 places the political organization of the free state beside the preservation of maritime heritage. Both processes require institutions, memory and long-term work.
Political administration and museum memory thus become part of the same process: a free state not only governs its territory, but also creates places where it can understand and preserve its own history.
