On June 20, 1963, Bulgaria and Austria upgraded their diplomatic missions to embassy status. Relations had first been established after the First World War, interrupted following Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938, and restored at legation level in 1947. The upgrade reflected a maturing bilateral relationship across the Cold War divide. Austria’s neutrality enabled useful economic and cultural contacts between Eastern and Western Europe, while Vienna became an important diplomatic centre for Bulgarian engagement. Later, shared membership in the European Union gave the relationship an additional institutional framework.
