The entrance is over 30 metres wide, and the ceiling of the main hall has seven natural openings that let daylight in \u2014 trees grow inside the cave itself.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike most of the others, you walk in freely, with no guide and no ticket, and the road takes you to the entrance. The cave is home to a large bat colony and closes to visitors in June and July while they raise their young. Check before you travel; the arrangements change.<\/p>\n<h3>#9 \u2014 Ledenika Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Vratsa Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 1 hr \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round; ice forms in winter and spring \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=53s\">\u25b6 0:53<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ledenika sits high in the Balkan Mountains above Vratsa and is the only cave here where the season genuinely matters. The ice formations appear in the cold months and vanish over summer \u2014 go in August and you will see a beautiful cave, but no ice.<\/p>\n<p>The road up is narrow and mountainous, and can be snowed in during winter. Inside there are steps and tight passages, so it is not the best choice for small children or anyone with limited mobility.<\/p>\n<h3>#8 \u2014 Magura Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Vidin Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 1 hr \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=71s\">\u25b6 1:11<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Magura is the only cave in Bulgaria with prehistoric paintings \u2014 animals, human figures and abstract symbols, drawn on the walls using bat guano. The images span several periods and rank among the most significant finds of their kind in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The halls are spacious and the route is relatively flat. It pairs naturally with the Belogradchik Rocks and nearby Lake Rabisha, which together make a full day in the northwest.<\/p>\n<h3>#7 \u2014 Yagodinska Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Smolyan Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 1 hr \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=89s\">\u25b6 1:29<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yagodinska is one of the longest caves in Bulgaria and runs across several levels. A section of it is open to visitors as a lit route passing formations, small pools and an underground stream.<\/p>\n<p>It sits in the Buynovo Gorge on the road towards Trigrad, which means it combines with Devil&#8217;s Throat in a single day. Wedding ceremonies are held inside, which tells you enough about the scale of the halls.<\/p>\n<h3>#6 \u2014 Saeva Dupka Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Lovech Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 40 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=106s\">\u25b6 1:46<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saeva Dupka is fairly compact, but the formations inside are exceptionally dense \u2014 stalactites, stalagmites and fused columns fill every one of its halls. The name comes from two brothers who, according to local tradition, hid here.<\/p>\n<p>The acoustics in the main hall are good enough that concerts are held there. If your visit coincides with one, it is worth rearranging the day around it.<\/p>\n<h3>#5 \u2014 Snezhanka Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Pazardzhik Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 30 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=125s\">\u25b6 2:05<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Snezhanka is small but among the most richly decorated in the country \u2014 it packs into a short distance what other caves spread over a much longer walk. The name, meaning &#8220;Snow White&#8221;, comes from a pale formation in the final hall resembling a female figure.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching the entrance means a steep path uphill, about twenty minutes on foot from the car park. That is the only genuinely physical part of the visit.<\/p>\n<h3>#4 \u2014 Bacho Kiro Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Gabrovo Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 30\u201360 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=145s\">\u25b6 2:25<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bacho Kiro is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bulgaria. Excavations have uncovered traces of occupation going back tens of thousands of years, including finds linked to the early presence of modern humans in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Two routes are offered, a short one and a long one. The cave is a few minutes from Dryanovo Monastery, so the two are visited together with no planning required.<\/p>\n<h3>#3 \u2014 Uhlovitsa Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Smolyan Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 40 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> seasonal \u2014 check ahead \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=165s\">\u25b6 2:45<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Uhlovitsa is the most physically demanding cave here. You enter by steep metal staircases, and inside there are near-vertical sections and underground waterfalls \u2014 this is not a level walk with a handrail.<\/p>\n<p>It is also the coldest of the ten, so a jacket is a requirement rather than a suggestion. The cave lies near Mogilitsa in a remote part of the Rhodopes; opening hours are limited and it may be closed in the colder months.<\/p>\n<h3>#2 \u2014 Prohodna Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Lovech Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> 30 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> free entry \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=183s\">\u25b6 3:03<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prohodna is known for the two openings in its ceiling, called the Eyes of God \u2014 in the right light they look exactly like a pair of eyes staring down. It is the most photographed cave in Bulgaria, and deservedly so.<\/p>\n<p>The cave is a through passage, as the name suggests, and you walk in one end and out the other. Entry is free, with no ticket and no guide. The openings are also used for bungee jumping, so quiet is not guaranteed.<\/p>\n<h3>#1 \u2014 Devil&#8217;s Throat Cave<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd<\/strong> Smolyan Province \u00b7 <strong>\u23f1<\/strong> about 30 min \u00b7 <strong>\ud83c\udf9f<\/strong> guided \u00b7 <strong>\ud83d\udcc5<\/strong> year-round \u00b7 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6U9dJvBm4Z4&amp;t=201s\">\u25b6 3:21<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Devil&#8217;s Throat is the most dramatic cave in Bulgaria. The Trigrad River disappears into the rock and crashes into an underground hall as a 42-metre waterfall. The noise inside is loud enough that the guide has to speak in pauses.<\/p>\n<p>You leave by a long, steep staircase upwards, which is part of the experience.
