Together they mark a turning point in Bulgaria&#8217;s history toward independence and statehood.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 12, 1875 \u2014 Plotting the Stara Zagora Uprising<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Meeting in Bucharest, the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee, prompted by Hristo Botev and Stefan Stambolov, voted to launch an armed uprising against Ottoman rule and divided the Bulgarian lands into revolutionary districts. Stambolov was assigned the Stara Zagora district, where the rising would erupt the following month.<\/p>\n<p>Though the uprising was quickly crushed and its failure triggered a crisis within the committee, it served as a direct rehearsal for the far larger April Uprising that followed seven months later.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 12, 1879 \u2014 The Bulgarian Navy Is Born<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In Ruse, the Bulgarian flag was raised for the first time over a small flotilla of vessels gifted by Russia \u2014 four steamships, a schooner, seven steam launches, a barge, and several rowing boats \u2014 to the sound of the march &#8220;Shumi Maritsa.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony marked the founding of the Danube Flotilla, the seed from which the modern Bulgarian Navy grew, with a sister Port Captaincy established the same day in Varna.<\/p>\n<p>You can step back to <a href=\"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria-august-11\/\">August 11<\/a> or forward to <a href=\"https:\/\/bronicable.com\/en\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria\/on-this-day-in-bulgaria-august-13\/\">August 13<\/a> in the series.
