August 14, 1877 — Battles Around Pleven<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bulgarian volunteer units and Russian cavalry clashed with Ottoman forces attempting to break through the encirclement of Pleven, fighting in the hills and villages surrounding the besieged city. The battles around Pleven involved Bulgarian civilians as well as soldiers — local residents guided Russian columns, carried supplies, and served as scouts in their own towns and countryside, becoming active participants in the liberation of their homeland.<\/p>\n

August 14, 1988 — Pernik Mime Festival<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The town of Pernik held the first edition of its international mime and pantomime festival, which would grow into one of the most respected events of its kind in Europe. Performers from across the continent and beyond converged on the mining city, establishing an unlikely cultural tradition that continues to this day and puts Pernik on the international arts map.<\/p>\n
