A medieval tsar’s audacious raid on a great Thracian city and a modest schoolroom comedy that launched a national art form: August 15 spans more than eight centuries of Bulgaria’s history in a single date.<\/p>\n

August 15, 1002 \u2014 Tsar Samuil Storms Adrianople<\/strong><\/h2>\n

While the Byzantine army was tied down besieging Vidin in the northwest, Tsar Samuil led his forces deep into Thrace and seized the great city of Adrianople, today’s Edirne. He timed the raid deliberately for the feast of the Assumption, when crowds had gathered in the city for its traditional fair, catching the defenders unprepared.<\/p>\n

The Bulgarians met no resistance, carried off a substantial haul of plunder, and withdrew \u2014 a bold strike during one of the most difficult stretches of Samuil’s long war against the Byzantine Empire.<\/p>\n

August 15, 1856 \u2014 Bulgaria’s First Play Takes the Stage<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the northeastern town of Shumen, students performed “Mihal,” a comedy adapted by teacher Sava Dobroplodni from a Greek original and reworked for a Bulgarian audience, marking the birth of Bulgarian theatre. Dobroplodni’s own student, Vasil Drumev \u2014 later a celebrated writer and churchman \u2014 took the title role.<\/p>\n

The modest school production launched a tradition that would grow, within decades, into a full-fledged national theatrical culture.<\/p>\n
