The methodical encirclement reflected lessons learned from costly earlier frontal assaults on the city&#8217;s formidable fortifications. Bulgarian militia units played a key role guarding supply lines and conducting reconnaissance across the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 16, 1944 &#8212; The War at Bulgaria&#8217;s Doorstep<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>As Soviet forces swept through Romania, German units began withdrawing northward, fundamentally altering the strategic landscape around Bulgaria.
