August 18 moves between the military fronts of the First World War and the diplomatic map of Europe after the breakup of Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n

August 18, 1916 \u2014 Bulgarian Forces Capture Kor\u00e7\u00eb<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On August 18, 1916, Bulgarian forces captured Kor\u00e7\u00eb, a city in what is now southeastern Albania. The event formed part of the operations on the Macedonian Front during the First World War. Bulgaria had entered the war on the side of the Central Powers in 1915, and military operations in the Balkans changed control over a number of territories.<\/p>\n

Kor\u00e7\u00eb was taken after the Greek garrison surrendered without prolonged resistance. This was not an isolated episode, but part of a wider campaign in which the forces involved sought control over important areas and lines of communication. For the people living in these lands, a change of military control also meant a new administration and a new political reality imposed by the course of the war.<\/p>\n

Bulgarian control of Kor\u00e7\u00eb proved temporary. Two years later, the war turned against Sofia and its allies, and the territorial gains did not last. That short-lived character is important when the event is placed in context: a victory on the battlefield does not guarantee a lasting political result when the outcome of the wider conflict remains uncertain.<\/p>\n

August 18, 1992 \u2014 Bulgaria Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Slovenia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On August 18, 1992, Bulgaria established diplomatic relations with Slovenia. Slovenia was a newly independent state following the breakup of Yugoslavia the previous year. For Bulgaria, this was part of the rapid recognition of, and effort to build relations with, the new states that had appeared on Europe\u2019s political map.<\/p>\n

Diplomatic relations provided an official framework for contacts between the two countries, including political, institutional and economic ties. They were a beginning rather than an endpoint. Relations between Bulgaria and Slovenia later deepened in the context of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, including both countries\u2019 membership in the European Union and NATO.<\/p>\n

August 18 therefore brings together two different maps of change: the military map of the Balkans in 1916 and the diplomatic map of Europe after 1991.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
