An uprising in the Strandzha and a Frenchman’s balloon rising over Plovdiv make August 19 one of the more vividly contrasting dates in Bulgaria’s history.<\/p>\n

August 19, 1903 \u2014 The Preobrazhenie Uprising Begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On August 19, 1903 \u2014 the Orthodox feast of the Transfiguration \u2014 Bulgarian revolutionary fighters in the Strandzha Mountains rose against Ottoman rule, launching the Preobrazhenie Uprising. It was a companion rebellion to the Ilinden Uprising that had broken out in Macedonia two and a half weeks earlier, part of the same broad struggle for liberation.<\/p>\n

The insurgents freed Vasiliko (today’s Tsarevo), Akhtopol, and other settlements, and for a brief moment established the short-lived Strandzha Republic. Ottoman forces moved quickly and crushed the rising within weeks, exacting harsh reprisals as they went. Yet despite its swift defeat, the uprising left a lasting mark on the Bulgarian and Thracian struggle for freedom, remembered as one of its defining episodes.<\/p>\n

August 19, 1892 \u2014 Bulgaria Takes to the Skies<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On August 19, 1892, at Plovdiv’s First Bulgarian Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition, the French balloonist Eug\u00e8ne Godard made the country’s first-ever balloon ascent. He lifted off in his balloon “La France” before a crowd of thousands that included Prince Ferdinand himself.<\/p>\n

A technical mishap meant that only Godard and his companion, the journalist Nikola Genadiev, could go up that day. Even so, the flight caused such a sensation that Godard went on to make twenty-two more ascents before the exhibition closed, briefly turning Plovdiv into Bulgaria’s first city of aviation. For one summer, the skies above the exhibition became the country’s most talked-about spectacle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
