In this recurring series, <strong>On This Day in Bulgaria<\/strong>, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 24, 1877 &#8212; Counting the Cost of Shipka<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the days following the defense of the Shipka Pass, Bulgarian commanders tallied the human cost of the battle. Hundreds of volunteers had fallen, and many more were wounded &#8212; but the pass remained firmly in Bulgarian and Russian hands. The story of the Shipka defenders spread rapidly through the European press, drawing admiration for the Bulgarian cause and contributing to growing international support for Bulgarian liberation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 24, 1944 &#8212; Romania Switches Sides<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Romania&#8217;s King Michael carried out a palace coup, arresting Marshal Antonescu and declaring armistice with the Allied powers. The move opened the Balkans to rapid Soviet advance and left Bulgaria strategically exposed.
