The siege was entering its most gruelling phase &#8212; a slow war of attrition that tested the endurance of defenders and attackers alike. Bulgarian militia units guarding the outer perimeter played a crucial role in preventing any Ottoman relief column from reaching the besieged city.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>August 28, 1943 &#8212; The Death of Tsar Boris III<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Tsar Boris III died in Sofia after a sudden collapse, just weeks after a tense meeting with Adolf Hitler at his Wolf&#8217;s Lair headquarters. His death &#8212; officially attributed to heart failure but the subject of historical debate &#8212; left Bulgaria without its head of state at the most critical moment of the war.
