In this recurring series, <strong>On This Day in Bulgaria<\/strong>, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 4, 1877 \u2014 Siege of Pleven is Established<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following several unsuccessful direct assaults, the combined Russian and Romanian forces decided to fully encircle the fortress of Pleven. General Eduard Totleben was appointed to oversee the siege operations. This strategy eventually forced the Ottoman army under Osman Pasha to surrender, marking a turning point in the war.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 4, 1974 \u2014 Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant Opens<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Bulgaria&#8217;s first nuclear power plant at Kozloduy was officially inaugurated with the commissioning of its first reactor.
