September 4 brings together a military turning point from the Russo-Turkish War and an important step in Bulgaria\u2019s technological development.<\/p>\n

September 4, 1877 \u2014 The Siege of Pleven<\/strong><\/h2>\n

After several unsuccessful direct assaults, the combined Russian and Romanian forces chose a different strategy: completely surrounding the fortress of Pleven. General Eduard Totleben was appointed to lead the siege operations.<\/p>\n

This change turned the siege into a prolonged military operation. The Ottoman army in Pleven was commanded by Osman Pasha, and the fortress became the focus of the fighting. In the end, the pressure forced the Ottoman forces to surrender. The outcome marked a turning point in the war and explains why Pleven holds such an important place in Bulgaria\u2019s memory of the Liberation.<\/p>\n

September 4, 1974 \u2014 Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant Opens<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Almost a century later, on the same date, Bulgaria\u2019s first nuclear power plant in Kozloduy was officially opened. Its first reactor entered operation.<\/p>\n

The event made Bulgaria a major energy producer in the Balkans and marked a new stage in the country\u2019s industrialization and technological development during the second half of the twentieth century. September 4 therefore connects the battlefield near Pleven with the energy infrastructure of modern Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
