By assuming the title of Prince of Northern and Southern Bulgaria, he validated the revolutionary act in the eyes of the nation, despite the risk of foreign military intervention.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 8, 1946 \u2014 Referendum Abolishes the Monarchy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A national referendum was held in Bulgaria to determine the country&#8217;s form of government. Over 90% of voters, under the influence of the ruling Fatherland Front coalition, voted to abolish the monarchy.
