Sophronius became one of the major figures of the early Bulgarian National Revival: a cleric, teacher, writer, and advocate of education in the Bulgarian language. His work connected church life with the awakening of a modern Bulgarian cultural identity under Ottoman rule. He is especially remembered for <em>Nedelnik<\/em>, one of the first printed books in modern Bulgarian, which made religious and moral instruction more accessible to ordinary readers. Later canonized by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Sophronius stands as a bridge between medieval tradition, Enlightenment influence, and the emerging Bulgarian national movement.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 17, 1944 \u2014 The Bulgarian Army Joins the Third Ukrainian Front<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On this day in 1944, the Bulgarian Army joined the Soviet Third Ukrainian Front against Nazi Germany during World War II. The move followed the dramatic events of early September: the Soviet declaration of war, the entry of Soviet troops, and the Fatherland Front takeover in Sofia. Bulgaria had been aligned with Germany, but after September 9 it turned its army against its former ally. Bulgarian forces then fought in operations in Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Austria, suffering significant casualties.
