The document entrusted the monastery with villages, meadows, and forests, confirming boundaries and rights. In the late medieval Bulgarian state, monasteries were not only religious centers; they also preserved literacy, manuscripts, memory, and economic life. The Rila Monastery later became one of the most important symbols of Bulgarian spiritual continuity under Ottoman rule. Ivan Shishman\u2019s diploma is therefore significant both as a medieval legal document and as part of the long history of the monastery\u2019s protected status and national importance.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 21, 1933 \u2014 The Leipzig Trial against Georgi Dimitrov Begins<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On this day in 1933, the Leipzig trial against Bulgarian communists Georgi Dimitrov, Vasil Tanev, and Blagoi Popov began. They were accused of involvement in the Reichstag fire, an event used by the Nazi regime to intensify repression in Germany. Dimitrov\u2019s courtroom defense became internationally famous because he challenged the accusations directly and turned the trial into a political confrontation with Nazi power. The Bulgarian defendants were acquitted on December 23 due to insufficient evidence.
