The revolt grew out of wartime hardship, military defeat, and anger among soldiers who had spent years in brutal conditions. Inspired in part by revolutionary ideas spreading across Europe after 1917, the mutiny quickly became a political challenge to the monarchy. Rebel units moved toward Radomir and Sofia, hoping to force Bulgaria out of the war and replace the existing order. Although the uprising was soon defeated, it showed how deeply World War I had shaken Bulgarian society and helped accelerate the end of Bulgaria&#8217;s participation in the conflict.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 24, 1990 \u2014 Zhelyu Zhelev Begins a Historic Visit to the United States<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On September 24, 1990, President Zhelyu Zhelev became the first Bulgarian head of state to visit the United States. The visit came during the dramatic first year after the end of communist rule, when Bulgaria was trying to redefine its foreign policy and reconnect with Western institutions. Zhelev attended the 45th session of the United Nations General Assembly and later met US President George H. W. Bush. The trip symbolized Bulgaria&#8217;s turn toward democratic legitimacy, open diplomacy, and Euro-Atlantic cooperation.
