The battle took place near the Danube fortress of Nikopol and became one of the final great medieval crusading efforts against Ottoman expansion in the Balkans. According to Bulgarian historical calendars, Sultan Bayezid I also led Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Sratsimir into captivity after the defeat. The consequences were severe for the remaining Bulgarian lands: the fall of Vidin and the collapse of organized Bulgarian statehood brought the Second Bulgarian Empire to its end.
