The revolt came shortly before the Salonica Armistice, after the defeat at Dobro Pole and years of exhaustion on the Macedonian front. Rayko Daskalov and Aleksandar Stamboliyski became central figures in the movement, which tried to turn military collapse into political revolution. The declaration did not survive: government forces, supported by loyal units and German troops near Sofia, soon stopped the rebels. Still, the Radomir episode revealed the scale of public anger at the war, weakened Tsar Ferdinand&#8217;s position, and foreshadowed the political upheavals that followed Bulgaria&#8217;s exit from World War I.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 27, 1987 \u2014 Ruse Prepares to Mark Its Clean-Air Protest<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On September 27, 1987, citizens in Ruse were on the eve of one of communist Bulgaria&#8217;s most important environmental demonstrations. The city had suffered for years from chlorine pollution drifting across the Danube from the chemical plant in Giurgiu, Romania. The pollution affected daily life, public health, and trust in the authorities, who were slow to acknowledge the problem openly. The next day, residents gathered to demand clean air and protection for their children. That protest became a symbol of civic awakening in late socialist Bulgaria.
