The agreement followed the Allied breakthrough at Dobro Pole, the Soldiers&#8217; Uprising, and the rapid collapse of Bulgaria&#8217;s military position. Under the armistice, Bulgaria had to demobilize much of its army, evacuate occupied territories, and allow Allied forces to use strategic points in the country. The political consequences were just as dramatic: Tsar Ferdinand abdicated days later in favour of Boris III. The armistice closed one of the most painful chapters in modern Bulgarian history and opened the path toward the Treaty of Neuilly, which imposed further territorial and military restrictions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>September 29, 1869 \u2014 The Statutes of the Bulgarian Literary Society Are Accepted<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On September 29, 1869, the first statutes of the Bulgarian Literary Society were accepted in Braila, Romania, where Bulgarian intellectuals and patriots had gathered to create a modern learned institution before the restoration of the Bulgarian state. The society began its work the following day and later became the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Its founders saw scholarship, language, history, and education as essential tools of national revival. At a time when Bulgaria was still under Ottoman rule, the institution gave organized form to the idea that cultural development could prepare the nation for political freedom.
