September 30, 1869 \u2014 The Bulgarian Literary Society Begins Its Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On September 30, 1869, the Bulgarian Literary Society began its activity in Braila, Romania. The organization later developed into the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the oldest modern Bulgarian scholarly institution. Founded by Bulgarian emigrant intellectuals during the National Revival, the society aimed to support education, cultivate the Bulgarian language, study national history, and connect Bulgarian scholarship with European intellectual life. Its work began before the restoration of Bulgarian statehood, which makes the date especially meaningful: the cultural institutions of modern Bulgaria were being built even before political independence returned. The society’s creation showed that knowledge, books, language, and historical memory were central parts of the Bulgarian national project.<\/p>\n

September 30, 1918 \u2014 The Salonica Armistice Comes into Force<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On September 30, 1918, the armistice signed in Salonica took effect, taking Bulgaria out of World War I. The agreement followed a devastating military and political crisis: the Allied breakthrough at Dobro Pole had shattered the front, soldiers’ unrest had spread, and the government had little room left to continue the war. The armistice required demobilization, evacuation of occupied territories, and acceptance of Allied military conditions. For ordinary Bulgarians, it marked the end of years of sacrifice but also the beginning of uncertainty, economic hardship, and diplomatic isolation. Within days, Tsar Ferdinand abdicated, and Bulgaria entered a difficult post-war period that culminated in the Treaty of Neuilly in 1919.<\/p>\n
