October 6, 1944 \u2014 The People’s Court Is Established<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On October 6, 1944, Bulgaria established the People’s Court, one of the most consequential institutions created after the Fatherland Front came to power. It was formed in the aftermath of Bulgaria’s wartime alliance with Nazi Germany and was presented as a mechanism for judging those responsible for dragging the country into disaster. In practice, the court became a vast political instrument of retribution and consolidation of the new regime. Thousands of people were tried, including former ministers, members of parliament, royal advisers, officers, journalists, and public figures. The People’s Court remains one of the most contested episodes in modern Bulgarian history: for some it represented punishment for collaboration, while for others it marked the beginning of communist political terror.<\/p>\n

On October 6, 1963, a Higher Institute of Chemical Technology was founded in Burgas. The decision reflected the industrial priorities of communist Bulgaria, especially the development of chemical production, oil refining, and technical education along the Black Sea coast. Burgas was becoming an important industrial centre, and specialized higher education was needed to train engineers, technologists, and researchers for the expanding economy. The institute later became part of the academic development of the city and contributed to the growth of technical expertise in southeastern Bulgaria.
