The Byzantine Empire formally recognized Peter&#8217;s title of tsar, equivalent to emperor, and agreed to pay annual tribute to Bulgaria. The Patriarchate of Constantinople also recognized the autocephalous status of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and acknowledged it as a patriarchate. On the same day, Peter married Princess Maria, renamed Irene, a name meaning peace. The agreement followed years of warfare under Simeon the Great and marked the beginning of a long period of stability.
