Its appearance came during the first year after the fall of the communist regime, when minority communities, civic groups, and independent associations were finding new public voices. For Bulgaria&#8217;s Armenians, whose presence in the country stretches back through several waves of migration and refuge, a dedicated weekly newspaper offered more than community news. It helped preserve language, memory, church life, and cultural identity in a rapidly changing democratic environment. The launch also reflected the broader transformation of Bulgarian public life after 1989, as print media multiplied and communities that had often been represented through official channels began speaking for themselves.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>October 11, 1999 &#8212; Memorial to Victims of Koutsian Labour Camp Is Unveiled<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A memorial was unveiled near Pernik to commemorate victims of communist repression in the Koutsian labour camp. The ceremony formed part of Bulgaria&#8217;s difficult post-1989 reckoning with forced labour camps, political persecution, and the machinery of repression used by the communist state. Koutsian was among the sites associated with the internment and punishment of people labelled politically unreliable or hostile to the regime. By placing a public memorial there, survivors, relatives, and civic organizations reclaimed a place that had long carried painful memories but little official recognition.
