The institution later became the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and its creation was one of the great cultural acts of the National Revival. At a time when Bulgaria still lacked political independence, the society created a centre for scholarship, language, history, and public education. Its founders understood that national liberation required more than armed struggle or diplomacy; it also needed schools, books, scientific work, and a shared cultural memory.
