Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, and Montenegro had formed an alliance to challenge Ottoman rule in the Balkans, and the main theatre for Bulgaria would be Thrace. Bulgarian armies soon advanced toward Lozengrad, L\u00fcleburgaz, \u00c7atalca, and the fortress of Adrianople, while the wider war redrew the map of the region. For Bulgaria, the First Balkan War was seen as a campaign for national unification and liberation of remaining Bulgarian-populated lands under Ottoman control. The declaration of war therefore opened one of the most consequential military episodes in modern Bulgarian history, full of early victories but followed by diplomatic frustration and the Second Balkan War.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>October 17, 1994 &#8212; Reneta Indzhova Heads Bulgaria&#8217;s First Caretaker Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Reneta Indzhova was sworn in as caretaker prime minister, becoming the first woman to head a Bulgarian government and the first person to lead a caretaker cabinet under the post-communist constitutional order. President Zhelyu Zhelev appointed the government after the resignation of Lyuben Berov and the dissolution of the 36th National Assembly, with early parliamentary elections scheduled for December. Indzhova&#8217;s cabinet governed during a tense transition period marked by economic uncertainty, political fragmentation, and public distrust of institutions. Its task was limited but delicate: keep the state functioning, prepare elections, and manage urgent administrative questions without a stable parliamentary majority.
