The association was later renamed the National Opera, and this early performance marked a decisive step in the creation of professional opera in Bulgaria. In the decades after Liberation, Sofia was building the institutions of a modern capital: theatres, schools, libraries, museums, and concert stages. Opera required trained singers, orchestral musicians, conductors, stage workers, translators, and audiences ready for a demanding European art form.
