In this recurring series, <strong>On This Day in Bulgaria<\/strong>, we look back at notable events, decisions, and milestones that happened on this date across the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>October 25, 1877 &#8212; Pleven Completely Encircled<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With the fall of the Gorni Dubnik redoubt, the encirclement of Pleven was complete. Osman Pasha&#8217;s garrison of some 40,000 troops was now entirely cut off, with no route in or out and no prospect of relief. The final chapter of the Pleven siege had begun &#8212; a grim countdown in which the Ottoman defenders faced a choice between starvation and a breakout through the besieging lines.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>October 25, 1993 &#8212; Bulgaria&#8217;s First Democratic Power Transfer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following parliamentary elections, Bulgaria&#8217;s Union of Democratic Forces formed a government under Zhelyu Zhelev &#8212; completing the country&#8217;s first fully peaceful democratic transfer of power. The transition demonstrated that Bulgaria&#8217;s democratic institutions, established just three years earlier, were functioning as intended and that the post-communist transition had reached a new
