Bolhrad became one of the great centres of the Bessarabian Bulgarian community, whose ancestors had moved north of the Danube during the turbulent years of Ottoman rule and Russo-Turkish wars. The church was more than a religious building. It helped anchor language, memory, education, and communal identity far from the Bulgarian lands south of the Danube. In the nineteenth century, such institutions preserved a sense of belonging before the modern Bulgarian state existed.
