Bulgarian troops had to redeploy rapidly from the southern border, where many expected an Ottoman reaction, toward the western frontier. The crisis became the first great test of the newly unified state: Bulgaria had limited resources, a young officer corps, and no support from Russia, whose officers had withdrawn. Yet the mobilization revealed a powerful national determination to defend the union. Within days, the confrontation culminated in the Battle of Slivnitsa, where Bulgaria&#8217;s victory secured the Unification in practice.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 3, 1989 &#8212; Ecoglasnost Takes Protest to Parliament<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>More than a century later, Sofia saw one of the first open civic demonstrations against Bulgaria&#8217;s totalitarian regime. Activists from the independent association Ecoglasnost marched to the National Assembly to submit a petition opposing major hydropower projects in Rila and the Mesta region, which they argued threatened fragile mountain ecosystems. The petition carried more than 11,000 signatures, collected during an international environmental forum that had drawn foreign journalists and diplomats to Sofia. The peaceful march, with thousands chanting for democracy and glasnost, became a turning point in public dissent.
