The conflict erupted after the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, which Serbia and Austria-Hungary saw as a threat to the regional balance. Bulgarian troops had to move rapidly from the Ottoman frontier toward the western border, while volunteers and poorly supplied units joined the defense. Slivnitsa became the decisive test of whether the young Bulgarian state could protect the Unification by force. Over the following days, Bulgarian resistance stopped the Serbian advance and transformed a dangerous invasion into a national victory, giving the Unification the military legitimacy that diplomacy alone could not secure.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 5, 1985 &#8212; The National Gallery for Foreign Art Opens in Sofia<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A century later, on November 5, 1985, the National Gallery for Foreign Art opened in Sofia. Housed in the former State Printing House, the institution was created to present art from beyond Bulgaria&#8217;s borders and to broaden the country&#8217;s cultural horizon during the late socialist period. Its collections brought together European, Asian, African, and other international works, giving Bulgarian audiences a permanent place to encounter global artistic traditions. The gallery later became part of the National Gallery complex, but its opening remains an important cultural milestone.
