November 2, 1885 — Serbia Declares War on Bulgaria<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On November 2, 1885, Serbia declared war on Bulgaria, only weeks after the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. King Milan of Serbia, encouraged by Austria-Hungary and worried by Bulgaria’s sudden strengthening, expected a quick victory against a country whose main forces were still concentrated near the Ottoman border. Instead, Bulgarian soldiers and volunteers rushed westward in forced marches and turned the crisis into a defining test of the young state. The Serbo-Bulgarian War lasted until November 16 and culminated in Bulgarian victories at Slivnitsa and Pirot. Its outcome defended the Unification in practice and showed that Bulgaria could protect a major national cause not only through diplomacy, but also through military organization, public mobilization, and political resolve.<\/p>\n

November 2, 1892 — Sofia University Establishes Its Department of Law<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On the same date in 1892, Sofia University established its Department of Law, an important step in building the institutions of modern Bulgarian public life. The young state needed trained jurists, administrators, judges, diplomats, and public officials who could work within European legal traditions while shaping Bulgaria’s own constitutional and civic order. Law education in Sofia helped professionalize the state after Liberation and supported the development of courts, ministries, municipal administration, and public debate. Over time, the faculty became one of the country’s central academic institutions, educating generations of lawyers and political figures. Its founding also reflected a broader national ambition: Bulgaria was not only defending its borders, but also constructing the intellectual and legal foundations of a durable European state.<\/p>\n
