November 14, 1863 — Hristo Botev Arrives in Odesa<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On November 14, 1863, Hristo Botev arrived in Odesa, one of the great centres of Bulgarian \u00e9migr\u00e9 life in the Russian Empire. He studied at the Second Odesa Gymnasium and entered an environment shaped by education, revolutionary ideas, and contact with other Bulgarians abroad. Odesa mattered deeply to the Bulgarian Revival: it offered schools, printing opportunities, intellectual circles, and links with communities in Bessarabia. For Botev, the city became part of his formation as a poet, publicist, and revolutionary. He later wrote his first poem, \u201cMaytse si,\u201d there, and his Odesa years helped sharpen the political and literary voice that would make him one of the most powerful figures in Bulgaria’s struggle for liberation.<\/p>\n

November 14, 1943 — The First Massive Allied Bombing of Sofia<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On November 14, 1943, Allied aircraft carried out the first massive air strike on Sofia during the Second World War. Bulgaria was then allied with Nazi Germany, and the bombing campaign aimed to pressure the government to break with the Axis and withdraw from occupied territories. According to BTA archive reporting, between 90 and 150 RAF bombers and fighters dropped 190 demolition bombs on the capital, killing 56 people, injuring nearly 200, and destroying 24 buildings. The raid opened a devastating sequence of attacks that continued into 1944 and left deep scars on Sofia’s civilian population and architectural heritage. The date remains one of the darker urban memories of wartime Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
