His reign came at a dramatic moment in Balkan history, just after the Fourth Crusade had captured Constantinople and created the Latin Empire. Kaloyan used diplomacy and military skill to strengthen the Second Bulgarian Empire, seeking international recognition while defending Bulgarian interests against Byzantines, Latins, and regional rivals. The union with Rome helped secure a royal title and greater legitimacy in the eyes of Western Europe, even as Bulgaria preserved its own political ambitions. Kaloyan&#8217;s rule soon became one of the most dynamic periods of medieval Bulgarian statecraft and warfare.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 8, 1936 &#8212; The Higher School of Commerce Opens in Svishtov<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the same date in 1936, the Higher School of Commerce opened in Svishtov, founded with funds bequeathed by the entrepreneur Dimitar Tsenov. The institution was created to train specialists in economics, trade, accounting, and administration at a time when Bulgaria needed modern professional education for business and public life. Svishtov, a Danube town with commercial traditions, became an academic centre whose influence extended far beyond the region. The school later developed into today&#8217;s D. A. Tsenov Academy of Economics.
