The territory, covering about 1,555 square kilometres and inhabited by roughly 65,000 people at the time, was transferred from Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. For Bulgaria, the loss became one of the most painful consequences of the post-war settlement, not only because of territory, but because Bulgarian communities were left outside the state border. The occupation caused national mourning and remained a lasting symbol of the country&#8217;s frustration with the treaties that followed defeat. The Western Outlands question continued to influence Bulgarian memory, diplomacy, and minority politics throughout the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 6, 1967 &#8212; Bulgaria Joins the UN Food and Agriculture Organization<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the same date in 1967, Bulgaria became a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. FAO membership connected Bulgaria more directly with international work on agriculture, food security, rural development, forestry, fisheries, and technical cooperation. For a country where farming and food production had long been central to the economy, participation in such a body carried practical as well as diplomatic value. It placed Bulgarian specialists, statistics, and institutions within broader global systems for exchanging knowledge on yields, nutrition, plant protection, and agricultural modernization.
