BTA identifies it as Bulgaria\u2019s first large industrial enterprise, which makes the date significant for the country\u2019s economic modernization. In the decades after Liberation, Bulgaria remained largely agrarian, with most people living in villages and working the land. Large factories were still rare, and industrial capital, technology, and managerial experience often came from abroad. The Sofia sugar factory therefore represented more than one business venture: it showed how foreign investment and urban labour were beginning to change the Bulgarian economy. Sugar production also linked agriculture with processing, trade, and consumption in a new way.
