The short conflict had begun after Serbia attacked Bulgaria in response to the Unification with Eastern Rumelia. Against expectations, Bulgarian forces halted the Serbian advance at Slivnitsa and pushed the war westward, proving that the new national cause could be defended on the battlefield. The Great Powers now stepped in to prevent a wider Balkan crisis and to protect the regional balance. For Bulgaria, accepting the ultimatum stopped further military gains, but the result was still politically decisive: the Unification had survived, and the young state had shown both courage and organizational strength.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 16, 1995 &#8212; The Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation Is Established<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On the same date in 1995, the Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation was established. It later joined the Charities Aid Foundation network headquartered in Britain, connecting Bulgarian civil society with international models of philanthropy, donor services, and nonprofit support. The foundation emerged during the difficult post-communist transition, when social needs were rising and many public institutions were under strain. Independent charitable structures helped create new habits of giving, corporate responsibility, and organized support for vulnerable groups, cultural causes, education, and community initiatives.
