Edited by Lyuben Karavelov, the newspaper became an important voice of the Bulgarian revolutionary movement in exile. It was closely connected with the Bulgarian Revolutionary Central Committee and helped circulate political ideas among Bulgarians living under Ottoman rule and in \u00e9migr\u00e9 communities north of the Danube. Through essays, commentary, and revolutionary argument, <em>Svoboda<\/em> promoted national liberation, civic awakening, and a more organized struggle for Bulgarian independence. Its appearance in Bucharest also reminds us how much of Bulgaria\u2019s 19th-century political culture was built outside the country\u2019s future borders, in places where activists could print, debate, and organize with greater freedom than in Ottoman territory.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>November 19, 1962 \u2014 Todor Zhivkov Becomes Prime Minister of Bulgaria<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On November 19, 1962, the National Assembly elected Todor Zhivkov as Prime Minister of Bulgaria. Zhivkov had already been First Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1954, and the new post further concentrated political authority in his hands. His premiership lasted until 1971, when constitutional changes created a new State Council and Zhivkov became its chairman. The 1962 appointment therefore marked an important stage in the consolidation of the political system that would dominate Bulgaria for decades. Under Zhivkov, the country remained firmly aligned with the Soviet Union, pursued state-led industrialization, and maintained one-party rule.
