Bulgaria was fighting on the side of the Central Powers, and the campaign against Romania was part of a wider military effort involving German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Bulgarian forces. The entry into the Romanian capital was a major symbolic and strategic success, showing the reach of Bulgaria\u2019s army beyond its own borders during the war. Yet the achievement must be understood in the larger context of a conflict that would ultimately end disastrously for Bulgaria. The country\u2019s wartime gains did not survive the defeat of the Central Powers, and the post-war settlement brought severe territorial and military restrictions. Bucharest in 1916 therefore represents both the height of Bulgarian military momentum and the fragility of wartime victories.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>December 5, 1991 \u2014 Bulgaria Recognizes Ukraine\u2019s Independence<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On December 5, 1991, Bulgaria recognized the independence of Ukraine. The decision came during the final weeks of the Soviet Union, when newly independent states were emerging across Eastern Europe and Eurasia. For Bulgaria, recognizing Ukraine was part of a broader reorientation of foreign policy after the end of communist rule and the collapse of the old Soviet-led bloc. Ukraine\u2019s independence also mattered because of historical, cultural, and human connections: Bulgarian communities had lived for generations in Bessarabia, Tavria, and other parts of Ukrainian territory. Recognition opened the way for formal diplomatic relations and new bilateral contacts between Sofia and Kyiv.
