The school opened only a decade after Liberation, at a time when the young state urgently needed teachers, lawyers, administrators, scholars, and public experts. Higher education was essential for building institutions that could function independently and for creating a national elite educated in Bulgaria rather than abroad. The date later became tied to University Students Day, one of the most recognizable student holidays in the country. The founding of the Higher School therefore belongs both to Bulgaria\u2019s educational history and to the wider story of state-building after 1878.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>December 8, 1949 \u2014 The Panagyurishte Gold Treasure Is Discovered<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On December 8, 1949, brothers Pavel, Mihail, and Petko Deikov discovered the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure near Panagyurishte in south-central Bulgaria. The find consists of nine richly decorated Thracian vessels dating from the 4th\u20133rd centuries BC and weighing more than six kilograms in total. It quickly became one of Bulgaria\u2019s most famous archaeological treasures and one of the most recognizable examples of ancient Thracian art. The vessels show exceptional craftsmanship, with mythological scenes, animal forms, and ritual functions that connect the region to the wider ancient world. The discovery strengthened Bulgaria\u2019s public fascination with Thracian heritage and became a symbol used in museums, exhibitions, and cultural diplomacy.
