The document replaced the Tarnovo Constitution and legally transformed Bulgaria into a socialist people’s republic. It reflected the political reality created after September 9, 1944, when the communist-led Fatherland Front took power, opposition forces were suppressed, and the monarchy was abolished by referendum in 1946. The new constitution reorganized the state around socialist principles and the dominance of the ruling party, even when formal institutions such as assemblies and councils remained. It stayed in force until 1971. December 4 therefore marks a decisive constitutional break: the liberal-monarchical framework of the Third Bulgarian State gave way to the legal order of communist Bulgaria.

December 4 — Bulgarians Celebrate St. Barbara’s Day

December 4 is also St. Barbara’s Day, known in Bulgarian tradition as Varvara, Varvaritsa, or Varvarinden. The Orthodox Church honours Great Martyr Barbara, while folk custom gives the day additional meaning connected with health, children, and protection from disease, especially measles. Women traditionally prepared round loaves with honey and gave them away, while children took part in rituals involving fire and boiled beans. In folk belief, St. Barbara is linked with St. Sava on December 5 and St. Nicholas on December 6, forming a small winter sequence captured in the saying that Barbara boils, Sava bakes, and Nicholas welcomes guests. The feast shows how Bulgarian calendar culture blends church commemoration with household ritual, seasonal beliefs, and protective customs during the Nativity fast.

Continue with December 3 or December 5.
