The institute became a scholarly organization devoted to the history, geography, ethnography, language, and culture of Macedonia and the Macedonian Bulgarian communities. Its work reflected the enormous importance of the Macedonian question in Bulgarian public life after the Balkan Wars and World War I, when borders, refugees, and national identity remained deeply contested issues. The institute operated until 1947 and was later restored in May 1990, after the fall of the communist regime. Its history shows how academic research, national memory, and political questions often intertwined in twentieth-century Bulgaria.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>December 21, 1996 \u2014 Prime Minister Zhan Videnov Resigns<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On this day in 1996, Zhan Videnov resigned as Bulgaria\u2019s prime minister.
