January 1 brings together two very different moments in Bulgaria\u2019s history: the discovery of the Rogozen Treasure and the country\u2019s entry into the European Union. One points back to ancient Thrace; the other marks a modern political choice.<\/p>\n
The Rogozen Treasure was discovered in the village of Rogozen in northwestern Bulgaria. It is the largest Thracian silver hoard found in the country and includes 165 vessels, many of them richly decorated. The objects were made between the late sixth and the first half of the fourth century BC.<\/p>\n
The collection offers a detailed glimpse into the aristocratic world of ancient Thrace. Its decoration and workmanship point to contacts with the Greek world and other cultures of the Balkans. Rogozen is more than a valuable archaeological collection: it records rituals, diplomacy and ideas of power.<\/p>\n
On January 1, 2007, the accession treaty came into force and Bulgaria became a full member of the European Union together with Romania. The moment followed a long political process that began after the changes of 1989 and continued through reforms, negotiations and difficult public debates.<\/p>\n
Membership opened access to the single market and European funds, while bringing responsibilities in justice, administration, agriculture and border control.<\/p>\n
The two events show Bulgaria through two lenses: ancient heritage and a contemporary European direction.<\/p>\n
