In Constantinople in 1876, the weekly Zornitsa began publishing. Connected with American missionaries and evangelical communities in the Bulgarian lands, it entered a public world where newspapers and schools were changing how ideas travelled.<\/p>\n
The Protestant communities behind the paper were small, but their schools and publishing work reached beyond their size. Zornitsa carried religious writing, translations and news to Bulgarian readers. Its pages belonged to a wider network linking Constantinople with communities across the Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n

In 1903, a congress in Thessaloniki decided on the Ilinden-Preobrazhenie Uprising. Revolutionary committees had been working in Macedonia and Thrace, where Ottoman rule continued and many Bulgarians lived outside the borders of the Principality of Bulgaria.<\/p>\n
The decision turned committee work into open revolt. The organizers had determination and local networks, but they faced an empire with far greater military power. The uprising was followed by severe reprisals and destruction, which became inseparable from its place in Bulgarian historical memory.<\/p>\n
